A new way of articulating what people are seeking to achieve, maintain, avoid, and recover as they live with the demands of chronic conditions and the pressures of care, work, environment, and life.
Real Lived Outcomes - The Lived Reality that Current Frameworks Miss
Most outcome frameworks begin with "health" and measure what fits inside that concept. Real Lived Outcomes begin with the lived dimensions of a life - bodily, perceptual, environmental, social, material, temporal - and articulate what people are working to hold together within them. Grounded in lived reality, RLOs are concrete and specific.
Where clinical endpoints measure treatment response, needs analyses identify what someone lacks, and PROM and quality of life scales score against pre-defined ratings, Real Lived Outcomes name the active work people undertake to keep life workable as they live with the demands of chronic conditions and the pressures of care, work, environment, and life - what care pathways, services, and technologies must do to support that work over time.
An individual set typically contains 100+ RLOs generated from a single structured context frame.
Every output is specific to that context, and no two are the same.
Each set serves as a robust analytical foundation that can be validated and refined with the people whose experience it describes, and from there used as the basis for research, innovation, policy, strategy, market positioning, service design, reimbursement claims, and commissioning.
Access Two Example RLO (Part) Sets
Each set is a downloadable PDF. Each was generated by Bergson in around ninety seconds from a single structured context frame.
Organised by themes, the RLOs in each set are specific to the context, emerging from the framing rather than drawn from a fixed taxonomy. The sets contain about 70 RLOs out of the full 100+, yet give a clear sense of what Bergson produces.

Male veterans aged 45–60 with chronic pain in deprived English seaside towns
70+ Real Lived Outcomes describing the states male veterans aged 45–60 work to sustain or keep at bay as they live with chronic pain in deprived English seaside towns, unable to hold down work due to pain and lack of local employment opportunities. Grounded in the specific geographies, economies, service landscapes and cultural norms of these places, these outcomes span daily functional stability and symptom containment, financial and resource security in a seasonal low-wage economy, social identity and dignified belonging in small towns, navigation of local services and visibility to gatekeepers, and movement through public spaces and home environments shaped by coastal climate and housing.
US Hospital ward nurses experiencing burnout
70+ Real Lived Outcomes describing what nurses on surgical wards in the US work to achieve, avoid, or stabilise as burnout accumulates across shifts. The set reaches into the lived realities of clinical staff that workforce surveys and wellbeing assessments cannot. Relevant for workforce retention, clinical leadership, occupational health, and anyone commissioning or designing for the people inside health systems rather than those passing through them.
Free. No commitment. Just the clearest demonstration we know of what Real Lived Experience intelligence looks like in practice.
How Bergson Generates RLOs
Bergson takes five short prompts: a role or purpose, a population, a primary experience or condition, a setting, and any additional context that shapes the lived field. From these, it generates a complete set of Real Lived Outcomes organised into themes, each with multiple outcomes and concrete examples drawn from the lived field.
The generation itself takes around ninety seconds. The framing of the prompts is what determines whether the output reaches what matters for your context. Good framing is collaborative work, which is why Bergson is currently available through guided generation rather than self-service.
Each Real Lived Outcome can be explored more deeply inside Bergson through a Tell Me More function, which opens the outcome into its constituent dimensions, examples, and relational conditions.
Ideas and concepts for innovation, service design, or strategy can also be generated from any Real Lived Outcome or from combinations of outcomes across themes, turning the set from a map of lived priorities into a working platform for design.
Get Started - Generate RLOs for Your Context, Problem or Purpose
Bergson generates Real Lived Outcomes for any context - across the demands of chronic conditions and the pressures of care, work, environment, and life.
A commissioned set gives you the complete output across all themes, framed and delivered by the Umio team.
Includes a one-hour working session with a member of the Umio team, covering framing of the five prompts, Bergson generation of one or more full sets across all themes, delivery as a professionally formatted PDF, and time to explore outcomes through Tell Me More and generate ideas or concepts from any outcome or combination of outcomes.

Going further - Validate, Prioritise, and Design with your RLO set
Real Lived Outcomes are most useful when validated with the population, prioritised against lived weight, and translated into design or strategy. Validation in Umio's methodology is collaborative refinement, not test-and-confirm - the RLOs are presented as analytical hypotheses about the lived field, and the validation work surfaces what resonates, what is missing, and how the outcomes are weighted in the lives they describe. Four further options build on the initial generation.
Workshop Validation
£5,000
What's Involved
-
Umio facilitates working sessions with a sample of the population the RLOs describe, testing the set against their lived experience, surfacing what resonates, what is missing, and how the outcomes are weighted in the lives they describe.
-
Output is a refined and validated set with qualitative grounding.
-
Suitable for early-stage validation, design research, or contexts where the population's voice should anchor the analytical foundation directly.
Field Validation
est. £20,000
What's Involved
-
Umio surveys your Real Lived Outcomes with a wider sample of the population they describe, identifying which outcomes matter most, which vary by segment, and where the strongest signals of priority lie.
-
Returns quantitative data alongside the analytical foundation, suitable for commissioning, prioritisation, or evidence-building.
-
Pricing depends on sample size and recruitment complexity.
Enterprise Engagement

What's Involved
-
Umio facilitates working sessions with your internal team - executives, designers, strategists, or clinical staff - to explore the RLOs against your organisation's assumptions, strategies, and priorities.
-
The session surfaces where the lived field aligns with current thinking, where it challenges existing approaches, and where the strongest opportunities for action sit.
-
Suitable for organisations integrating RLOs into market access and positioning, innovation, design, or strategy practice.
Design Direction
Fee on Request
What's Involved
-
The Umio team analyses your validated set and translates it into actionable design, strategy, or commissioning directions.
-
The report identifies which lived states most warrant innovation / intervention, names the concepts and ideas that would address them, and grounds these recommendations in the relational logic of the lived field rather than in generic best practice.
-
Translate RLOs into real action.
Who Real Lived Outcomes are for
Real Lived Outcomes are immediately useful for:
- Designers and innovation teams identifying where existing products and services fall short
- Commissioners and service planners prioritising investment
- Life sciences and medical device companies grounding strategy in patient and carer experience
- Occupational health and HR teams understanding what employees are navigating
- Policy teams mapping the lived realities that policy must reach, and,
- Researchers and academics grounding studies in situated experience.
Every set is specific to the context you bring.
Bergson is the AI platform of Ooex, Umio's technology partner - built on twenty years of research, philosophy, and practice in real lived experience. It is the only system designed to perceive what health systems and frameworks miss.
