One consistent question.

Example projects

Our projects span nearly two decades and two distinct methodological eras. Work prior to 2019 was conducted using outcome-driven innovation and ecosystem mapping methods. From 2019 onward, Real Lived Experience and the RLX framework became the foundation of everything we do. What has remained constant across both eras is the orientation: beginning from the people and conditions involved, not from system-defined abstractions.
ND 1 UK Armed Forces Veterans with Chronic Pain

A twelve-month research and platform design project with veterans across all Armed Forces branches - funded by the UK Office for Veterans' Affairs. Produced a developmental model of pain acceptance, five distinct veteran outlooks on chronic pain, a complete set of Real Lived Outcomes generated by Bergson, and a proof-of-concept platform that veterans described as unlike anything they had encountered in the health system.

ND 1 Chronic Pain Ecosystem - Northern Ireland

A community ecosystem mapping and design project exploring how chronic pain is produced and sustained across social, environmental, clinical, and relational systems in Northern Ireland. Developed a new community model for addressing chronic pain that reached beyond clinical pathways to the full relational and spatial conditions shaping how pain is lived.

ND 1 Diabetic Obesity and Weight Loss
A deep lived experience research project exploring what it is actually like to live with the overlapping realities of diabetes and obesity - and why conventional behaviour change and weight management programmes consistently fail. Revealed hidden social, affective, and environmental forces that make sustained change so difficult and that standard frameworks do not capture.
ND 1 Living with a Stoma
One of Umio's longest-running condition areas, developed through extensive research with stoma patients across Europe and North America - conducted in part by Chris Lawer as a stoma patient himself. Produced some of the deepest lived experience insight into ostomy care available anywhere, directly informing product strategy and innovation for leading medtech companies including Coloplast.
ND 1 Diabetic Foot Ulcers
A technology innovation project supporting the development of advanced point-of-care wound infection diagnostics for diabetic foot ulcers. RLX research identified the patient and practitioner lived experience dimensions of wound management that the technology needed to address - including the relational, spatial, and psychological conditions shaping how people manage wounds in daily life rather than in clinical settings.
ND 1 Surgical Risk
A market and innovation project for a global fibre-based materials company exploring the surgical gowns and drapes market through the lens of lived experience - including the perspectives of surgeons, theatre nurses, and infection control teams. Identified hidden opportunity spaces that standard market analysis had not surfaced.
ND 1 Nursing Home Continence
A lived experience and innovation project exploring continence care in nursing home settings - one of the most consistently underserved areas of chronic care. Surfaced the hidden dignity, relational, and identity dimensions of continence experience that clinical frameworks reduce to a functional problem, and used those insights to guide product and service concept development.
ND 1 Perinatal Care

An ecosystem mapping and design project exploring the full relational, spatial, and institutional conditions shaping perinatal experience - from pregnancy through to early parenthood. Challenged clinical-pathway-centred models of perinatal care and developed a more ecologically grounded understanding of what genuine support for new parents requires.

These are a selection of the projects we have completed. Many of our engagements are confidential - the organisations we work with are often doing things they do not want competitors to see .If you are working on a condition, population, or innovation challenge that is not listed here, get in touch. The chances are we have relevant experience - or Bergson can generate the insight you need in minutes.
